Seed Money Support: Frequently Asked Questions
The Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania holds an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (ACS IRG) to support seed money grants to faculty to conduct innovative cancer research projects that have the potential for future peer review funding. The ACS IRG funds innovative cancer research projects that have the potential for future peer review funding. Research projects currently funded through a national research grant will not be accepted.
Eligibility
- Only junior-level faculty are eligible - faculty within six years of their first independent faculty appointment or equivalent (e.g., Assistant Professor, Research Assistant Professor) who do not hold independent national competitive research grant.
- Investigators who have an NIH Career Development (K) award are eligible if other requirements are met.
- Investigators who had a national competitive research grant that was not renewed and are still within six years of their first independent faculty appointment, are eligible.
- Citizens, non-citizen nationals, and permanent residents of the United States and its possessions or territories are eligible.
Ineligibility
- Investigators who have received prior support from the ACS Institutional Research Grant or have a national competitive grant (i.e., NIH R29; R01, NSF, ACS) are not eligible.
- Non-faculty (e.g., residents, fellows) are not eligible.

$5,000 - $30,000

- All full-time University faculty are eligible to apply for the Cancer Center Pilot Projects Program. The proposed area of research cannot be funded through an existing or prior peer-reviewed national research grant (i.e., NIH, ACS, DOD).

- Non-faculty (e.g., residents, fellows) are not eligible.

The Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania announces the availability of Cancer Center Collaborative Pilot Projects Program. Among the factors of high value to the scientific reviewers will be: translational research impact, new collaborations (researchers have not previously worked together), researchers representing more than one discipline or department, novelty of the research concept, and research addressing a high priority area.
Eligibility
- Proposals must be submitted by two or more Penn faculty members. All full-time University faculty are eligible to apply for the Cancer Center Collaborative Pilot Projects Program. The proposed area of research cannot be funded through an existing or prior research grant.
Ineligibility
- Non-faculty (e.g., residents, fellows) are not eligible.
Funding Level
Maximum $75,000
Award Period
Two years from the date of notice of award. Award notices will not be issued until projects are approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Eligibility
- Full-time University faculty who have not held extramural support (i.e., R29, R01, P01). The proposed area of research cannot be funded through an existing or prior peer-reviewed national research grant (i.e., NIH, ACS, DOD).
- Established investigators in other areas of biomedical research who wish to apply their expertise to a problem in gastrointestinal cancer.
- Established cancer or digestive and liver investigators who wish to study an area of gastrointestinal cancer that represents a significant departure from currently funded work.
- Citizens, non-citizen nationals, and permanent residents of the United States and its possessions or territories are eligible.
Ineligibility
- Investigators who have received prior support extramural support (i.e., R29, R01, P01).
- Non-faculty (e.g., Residents, Fellows, Instructors) are not eligible unless a commitment letter by the Departmental Chair is provided stating the PI will become faculty by the start of the award.
Funding Level
Maximum $45,000
Award Period
Will be stated in the award letter.
